Yangmasho Shaiza
Yangmaso Shaiza (1923-1984) A devoted leader who believed nothing but in the unification of Manipur rose to power in 1977 as the first tribal Chief Minister. Contrary to the idea of communalism, tribalism or any form of disintegration this man was someone who pursued oneness amongst all. And thus, was respected and deeply admired by all the tribes and communities of the state. In the 60’s when the Manipur Nationalist Party demanded the Manipur merger agreement to be revoked, Shaiza actively participated and later on is believed to have brought the “Manipur Hills Union within the folds of electoral politics”. Because of this, it is widely believed today, his fate brought him close to his demise. And so it was, January the 30th 1984 when he was brutally murdered in front of his family by the members of NSCN.
Some of his achievements during his tenure were the conversion of 107 private schools and colleges to government. He upgraded the district administration and provided autonomy to the council. In terms of infrastructure, he resolved connectivity issues and safeguarded the proper supply of water and electricity even to the remotest part of Manipur. Furthermore, it was under his watch that ICDS first started at Ukhrul. And though his tenure lasted for only 2 and half years, he had accomplished a small but significant proportion that many ministers from today with a career spanning over a decade couldn’t.
